The game rules for the Great Big Lottery effective for draws from 7 April 2023

1. Terms and Conditions:

1.1 The promoter of the Great Big Lottery (the “Lottery”) is Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, registered charity number 1160024 and company number 09338724, whose registered address is 40 Bernard Street, London, WC1N 1LE (the “Charity”).

1.2 The Lottery is open to all residents of Great Britain (which comprises England, Scotland and Wales, and excludes Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) aged 18 years or over. Employees of the Charity and their families, and employees of Sterling Management Centre Limited (our “External Lottery Management Company”) or any other third party directly associated with the administration of the Lottery are excluded from entering this Lottery.

1.3 The Charity reserves the right to hold void, cancel, suspend, or amend the Lottery where it becomes necessary to do so.

1.4 Monies raised by the Charity in the Lottery will support the work of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust where the need is greatest.

1.5 Participants are deemed to have accepted and agreed to be bound by these Terms and Conditions upon entry. The Charity reserves the right to refuse entry or refuse to award the prize to anyone in breach of these Terms and Conditions.

1.6 The Charity reserves the right to make changes to these Terms and Conditions from time to time.

2. Participation and Registration in the Draw:

2.1 Participation in the Lottery costs £1 per chance (“Chance”).

2.2 Chances are limited to a maximum of 10 Chances per person per week.

2.3 Entries can be made via the website, by post or over the telephone. Individuals may also sign up to participate in the Lottery through one of our face to face fundraisers.

2.4 All postal entries should be sent to The GOSHCC Great Big Lottery, Furness Gate, Furness Business Park, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria LA14 2PE.

2.5 Following registration, the Charity will send you confirmation of your entry. If you have chosen to pay by Direct Debit you will receive an advance notification letter. The confirmation will specify your Game Numbers and will confirm your name, address and any other details provided to the Charity as part of your registration.

2.6 Your Chances will be entered into the next available Draw following receipt of payment. In order to be entered in the Super Draw (see 3.4 below), you must have registered to play the Lottery, and participated in at least one weekly draw immediately prior to the Super Draw taking place.

3. Prizes:

3.1 The prizes are guaranteed for each draw at:

  • 1. Top Prize - £1,000
  • 2. 2nd Prize - £100
  • 3. 3rd Prize – 10 x £50
  • 4. 4th Prize – 50 x £10
  • 5. 5th Prize – 100 x 1 free entry to the next draw

3.2 The prizes are non-exchangeable and non-transferable.

3.3 The prizes are subject to change and availability.

3.4 For one draw each year, the top prize will increase to £10,000 for our Super Draw. The Super Draw will take place on the last Friday in February each year, the exact date for which will be set out on the Lottery website – www.lottery.gosh.org; in letters accompanying tickets by post; or by notification from one of our fundraisers. All enrolled “weekly” players will be automatically entered into the Super Draw.

4. Payment:

4.1 Payment for participation in the Lottery can be made by cheque, debit card or direct debit or any other method made available by the Charity from time to time. CAF and other charity vouchers cannot be accepted as payment for Chances.

4.2 Payment for Lottery Chances are processed by our External Lottery Management Company. Therefore:

  • i. Direct Debit payments will be referenced as “GOSHCC Lot XXXXXX” (the last six digits will show your Lottery ticket number) on your bank statement. Your statement may also reference our External Lottery Management Company in the abbreviated format “SMC”.
  • ii. Cheques must be made payable to GOSHCC Lottery.
  • iii. Debit Card payments will be referenced as GOSHCC Lottery on your card statement.
  • iv. Any other method made available by the Promoter from time to time would also
  • be referenced as or be payable to GOSHCC Lottery on any appropriate documentation.
  • v. Your bank or card provider may also send you payment notification which may reference our External Lottery Management Company.

4.3 The Charity accepts no responsibility if the chosen method of payment is cancelled in error.

4.4 No responsibility is taken for Chances and payments which are lost, damaged, illegible or from which the prize-winner cannot be identified, or for any technical failure or event, beyond the Charity’s reasonable control, which may cause the Lottery to be disrupted or corrupted. Proof of posting will not be accepted as proof of receipt.

4.5 We do not refund Chance purchases except under the self-exclusion scheme for people vulnerable to gambling addiction as laid out at Section 8.5 and/or under the under-age gambling as laid out at Section 8.4 of these Terms and Conditions.

5. Draw:

5.1 The winners will be chosen by random draw (the “Draw”) from all the entrants in the Lottery, for which payment has been received.

5.2 The Draw will be run at our External Lottery Management Company’s offices.

5.3 The Draw will be determined by means of an industry standard random number generator.

5.4 The weekly Draw will take place on a Friday.

5.5 If the date of the Draw is a bank holiday, the Draw will take place on the next working day.

5.6 The result of the Lottery is final. If you wish to make a complaint, the Charity do operate a Complaints and Dispute Procedure, which is available here.

6. Winners:

6.1 For winners of financial prizes, they will be notified by post within 14 days of the Draw. such notification will include a cheque to the value of the prize won made payable to the winner. Prizes will be posted to winners as soon as practicably possible. Prizes may be subject to successful completion of age verification (see 6.5 below). Winners will be kept apprised of the delivery expectations.

6.2 For winners of the free entry prize, they will be notified by post which will be sent out by Royal Mail on the day the Draw has taken place. The free entry will have its own set of lottery numbers which will be included in the notification to the winner. The free prize entry will be automatically entered into the following weeks draw in addition to the paid entries for that player. Once this entry has been used in a draw, the lottery numbers will be removed from the player and may be reused at a later date.

6.3 The Charity accepts no responsibility for the prize being lost, damaged or delayed in the post.

6.4 A list of all winner’s initials, surnames and county will appear on the Charity lottery website at lottery.gosh.org/results within 2 working days of the draw taking place and will be available on request after this time by phoning our Lottery Helpline on 0330 1239868, (open Monday-Friday, 9.00am-5.00pm).

6.5 Winners may be required to provide proof of age in line with Section 8.4 below on responsible Gambling. If satisfactory evidence is not provided within three months of the request for proof of age, then the prize will be forfeited, and the Charity will be entitled to select another winner.

6.6 Any unclaimed prizes will be re-credited to the Promoter’s main account after a period of 6 months has elapsed.

6.7 Winners may be asked to participate in publicity related to the Lottery which may include the publication of their name and/or photograph in any media. Winners have the right to choose not to participate in publicity.

7. Liability

7.1 Any dispute or claim between the parties arising out of or in connection with these Terms and Conditions or its subject matter or formation (including non-contractual disputes or claims) shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Each party irrevocably agrees that the courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any dispute or claim (including non-contractual disputes or claims) arising out of or in connection with these Terms and Conditions.

7.2 Insofar as is permitted by law, the Charity, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winners or accept liability for any loss or damage occurring as a result of taking up their prize except where it is caused by the negligence of the Charity, its agents or distributors or that of their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected. For the avoidance of doubt, nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall limit or exclude the Charity’s liability for fraud, personal injury or death, which after investigation is found to have been howsoever caused by the Charity.

7.3 The Charity shall not be liable to you for any loss or damage suffered by you arising from:

  • i. Any delays or failures in the postal service or other delivery methods used by the Charity or you from time to time;
  • ii. Any delays or failures in any systems used by the Charity or you to transmit e-mails;
  • iii. Any failure in any software or other systems used by the Charity for the administration of the Lottery;
  • iv. Any delays or failures in the banking system used by the Charity or you;
  • v. Any refusal by the Charity to accept registration of an individual as a Member or the cancellation of a Member by the Charity;
  • vi. Any failure to enter your Lottery Chance into the Draw; or
  • vii. Any event beyond the reasonable control of the Promoter.

7.4 The Charity shall not be liable to you in contract for negligence or otherwise for any indirect or consequential loss suffered by you in relation to your participation in the Lottery (including loss of the opportunity to enter the Lottery and/or the Chance of winning a prize).

8. Responsible Gambling:

8.1 In line with the Gambling Act 2005 objectives, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity are committed to promoting open and responsible gambling. Our lotteries aim to:

  • i. encourage fair and open play;
  • ii. keep crime out of gambling;
  • iii. protect the young and the vulnerable.

8.2 The sections below set out our procedures in ensuring responsible gambling:

8.3 Gambling Limits:

8.3.1 The Charity limits the sale of lottery Chances to 10 chances per person per week.

8.4 Under-Age Gambling:

8.4.1 Gambling under the age of 16 is an offence, and the Charity has chosen not to allow participation to individuals under the age of 18. Therefore, Chances will not be sold to, or by, a person under the age of 18.

8.4.2 The Charity carries out checks to ensure participants are not under the age of 18 years, and actively take steps to ensure that our lotteries do not attract young people, including screening supporter data to ensure we do not promote the Lottery to anyone under the age of 18.

8.4.3 The Charity reserves the right to undertake random age verification spot checks on entries received from any player and winning entries to assure itself that entrants are 18 years or over.

8.4.4 When undertaking random age verification, we will only accept valid, legible, photographic ID.

8.4.5 Players’ accounts may be suspended until satisfactory proof of age is provided.

8.4.6 If a Chance is sold unknowingly to, on behalf of, or for a person under the age of 18, or an individual is unable to successfully complete a random age verification spot check, they will be exempt from the Lottery and will forfeit their prize and the stake will be returned.

8.4.7 If upon winning any prize in the Lottery, any individual is unable to prove that they are 18 years or over, then any winnings will be forfeited, and any stakes paid will be returned.

8.5 Self-exclusion:

8.5.1 While most people gamble within their means, we recognise gambling can be a problem for some.

8.5.2 If you are worried about your gambling or that of someone close to you, Gambleaware can provide support and information. You can contact Gambleaware via the website, begambleaware.org or by calling 0808 8020 133.

8.5.3 To support problem gamblers, we operate a self-exclusion policy, which means you will not receive any information about our Lottery. To be added to our self-exclusion programme please contact our Lottery Helpline on 0330 1239868, (open Monday-Friday, 9.00am-5.00pm).

8.5.4 You can also exclude yourself from future Great Ormond Street Children’s Charity raffle and lotteries by writing to us at GOSH Charity, 40 Bernard Street, London WC1N 1LE or emailing us at supporter.care@gosh.org. We will take all reasonable steps to prevent any marketing material relating to our raffles being sent to any self-excluded customer and maintain a register of self-excluded persons.

8.6 Data Protection

8.6.1 We (Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and its trading subsidiary Great Ormond Street International Promotions Limited) will always treat your personal details with the utmost care and will never sell or swap with other organisations for their marketing purposes. We will keep your data safe and private, holding the information you provide for communication, marketing, analysis and administrative purposes.

9. Useful Information:

9.1 Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity Great Big Lottery 2021 is registered with the Gambling Commission under the 2005 Gambling Act. Responsible person: Mrs Claire Robson and Ms Elizabeth Tait.

9.2 Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity is licenced by the Gambling Commission:

9.3 Printing of the Lottery and response handling activities are being managed by Sterling Management Centre Limited, licenced and regulated in Great Britain by the Gambling Commission under account number 3137, on behalf of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity.

9.5 In 2022 the total proceeds from all entries sold for the Lottery was £1,518,489. Of these total proceeds prizes were funded by GOSH Charity through funds raised not from ticket sales, 0.05% was spent on expenses relating to the promoting and running of the Lottery and 99.95% was applied for the unrestricted purposes of the Charity, whose core objective is to transform the lives of seriously ill children. The average odds of winning a prize with effect from 1 April 2023 are projected to be approximately 1 in 324. These statistics were last reviewed in February 2023 and will be reviewed on an annual basis.
